Filter media
Filter media are the materials that fill the pressure filters of the pre-treatment stage: silica sand, anthracite and garnet in multimedia filters, activated carbon to remove chlorine and odours, and softener resin to remove hardness. ALPHA for Environmental Technologies supplies media in the types and grades each filter needs.

Types of filter media
-
Sand and multimedia
Layers of anthracite, sand and garnet that catch suspended solids and turbidity at different depths.
-
Activated carbon
Removes chlorine, odours and organic matter and protects the reverse osmosis membranes.
-
Softener resin
Removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness and is regenerated with brine.
-
Support gravel
Holds the media above the distributor and keeps it from leaving with the water.
Frequently asked questions about filter media
When should filter media be replaced?
It depends on the media and the water: activated carbon is replaced when exhausted and chlorine appears in its outlet, while sand needs topping up for backwash losses at longer intervals.
Why are multimedia filter layers arranged in order?
The media differ in density, so the lighter, coarser layer settles on top and the heavier one at the bottom, spreading filtration through the bed.
Can activated carbon replace SMBS for chlorine removal?
Both remove chlorine before the membranes; the choice depends on the plant design, the chlorine load and operating cost.
What do I need to order media?
The media type and quantity, or the filter diameter and height so we can work out the quantity.
