UV lamps

UV lamps are the ultraviolet lamps of disinfection units. They emit at around 254 nm, a wavelength that inactivates bacteria and other micro-organisms without adding chemicals to the water. ALPHA for Environmental Technologies supplies replacement UV lamps and their protective quartz sleeves for your unit’s model.

Parts of a UV disinfection unit

  • Lamp

The UV source; its output falls with operating hours even while it still lights.

  • Quartz sleeve

A clear tube that keeps the lamp out of the water and must stay clean for the UV to pass.

  • Ballast

Powers the lamp; a ballast fault leaves the lamp off.

Frequently asked questions about UV lamps

When should a UV lamp be replaced?

Makers usually rate lamps for about 9,000 operating hours, roughly one year of continuous use; after that the UV output drops even if the lamp still lights. Check your unit's manual.

Why must the quartz sleeve be cleaned?

Minerals, iron and manganese build a coating on it that cuts the UV reaching the water, more so in hard water.

Is a UV unit enough on its own?

UV is effective against micro-organisms but leaves no residual in the water, so chlorine may be added to protect tanks and networks, depending on the use.

What do I need to order a replacement lamp?

The disinfection unit model, or the lamp length and wattage, or a photo of the lamp.
