Consumables

Consumables are the materials a desalination or treatment plant needs replaced or topped up regularly to keep its performance: the media in pressure filters, cartridge filters, and the chemicals used for disinfection and scale prevention.

ALPHA for Environmental Technologies supplies these consumables to the specification of your plant, and our ready-made plants include their operating supplies free of charge for the first six months.

Consumables and what they do

  • Filter media

Sand, multimedia and activated carbon that fill pressure filters to remove suspended solids, turbidity, chlorine and odours.

  • Cartridge filters

The last filtration stage before the reverse osmosis membranes, replaced when they clog or the pressure drop across them rises.

  • Chemicals

Chlorine for disinfection, antiscalant to protect the membranes from scale, and SMBS to remove chlorine before the membranes.

Frequently asked questions about consumables

When should cartridge filters be replaced?

When the pressure drop across the filter rises or the flow falls; the maintenance schedule sets the interval from the water quality and operating hours.

Why is antiscalant dosed before RO membranes?

It reduces salt scaling on the membrane surface, which keeps the membranes productive and extends their life.

Why must chlorine be removed before reverse osmosis membranes?

Free chlorine damages most reverse osmosis membranes, so SMBS dosing units or activated carbon filters remove it first.

Do new plants come with free consumables?

ALPHA's ready-made plants include operating supplies such as cartridge filters and disinfection materials free of charge for the first six months.
