FRP media filters
FRP media filters are fibreglass-reinforced plastic pressure vessels filled with filter media (sand and multimedia, activated carbon or softener resin) and run by a control head that manages backwashing. They resist corrosion and weigh less than metal vessels. ALPHA for Environmental Technologies supplies FRP vessels in a range of diameters and heights for pre-treatment stages.

What FRP vessels are used for
-
Sand and multimedia filters
Remove suspended solids and turbidity before the membranes.
-
Activated carbon filters
Remove chlorine, odours and organic matter.
-
Softeners
Hold the resin that removes hardness.
How the vessel size is chosen
-
Flow rate
Sets the vessel diameter needed for a suitable filtration velocity.
-
Media type and depth
Set the vessel height and the freeboard needed for backwashing.
-
Operating pressure
The line pressure must stay below the vessel rating.
-
Vessel opening
Sets the size of the control head and the internal distributor.
Frequently asked questions about FRP media filters
What pressure can FRP vessels take?
Most FRP vessels are rated for up to about 150 psi (around 10 bar), and some large diameters lower; check the vessel's data label.
When does an FRP vessel need replacing?
When the shell or opening cracks or leaks, or when the plant is expanded beyond the flow the vessel suits.
Is the filter backwashed at the service flow rate?
No. Backwashing usually needs a higher flow than service to lift and clean the media, which the pump and control head must allow for.
What do I need to order a replacement vessel?
The vessel diameter, height and opening size, or a photo of its data label.
