Water pumps

Water pumps are the heart of a desalination or treatment plant: they move water from the source and raise its pressure so it can pass through the filters and then the reverse osmosis membranes. ALPHA for Environmental Technologies supplies replacement feed, high-pressure and transfer pumps for well, municipal and seawater plants, matched to the flow and pressure required.

Pump types in a desalination plant

  • Feed pump

Draws raw water from the well or tank and sends it through pre-treatment at low pressure.

  • High-pressure pump

Raises the pressure to the level the reverse osmosis membranes need, which is much higher in seawater plants than in well-water plants.

  • Product transfer pump

Moves the desalinated water from the product tank to the points of use or storage tanks.

  • Cleaning pump

Circulates the cleaning solution through the membranes during clean-in-place (CIP) cycles.

How we match a replacement pump

  1. Flow rate

The water volume required, in cubic metres per hour.

  2. Required pressure

The operating pressure at the pump outlet for that stage of the plant.

  3. Materials

Stainless steel for well water, and more corrosion-resistant grades such as duplex for seawater.

  4. Power and connections

Motor power, supply voltage and connection sizes.

Frequently asked questions about water pumps

What are the signs of a failing high-pressure pump?

Falling operating pressure or plant output, a louder or hotter pump, or leaks at the seals.

Why do seawater plants need different pump materials?

Seawater is highly corrosive, so more resistant grades such as corrosion-resistant stainless or duplex steel are used instead of standard materials.

Can I fit a more powerful pump than the original?

Not without a calculation: the pump must match the flow and pressure the membranes and pipework were designed for, so the plant stays within its operating limits.

What do I need to order a replacement pump?

A photo of the current pump's nameplate or its model, with the plant capacity and the type of water.
